In the opening Bronx vs. Bronx match-up, players from FDA III took on Monsignor Scanlon. Afterwards, Long Island's Deer Park HS battled Brooklyn's Acorn Social Justice HS.
Scanlon undresses FDA III, 84-64
Monsignor Scanlon took the lead and ran with it as their twin towers, 6'9" John Nwankwo and 6'8" Emanuel Chukwu made it difficult for FDA to get a clear view of the hoop.
With an offensive barrage by guard John Dewey (13 points) and inside buckets and rebounding by Nwankwo (14 points), a sophomore, Scanlon took a 12 point lead into the second quarter.
FDA began to respond as Coach Jerome Davis unleashed its secret weapon, 6'4"shooting guard Desi Rodriguez. Dropping 15 of his game high 35 point in the first half, the talented lefty led FDA on a 9-2 run and with 4:17 remaining, sliced their deficit to a mere 3 points.
Scanlon responded with a 9-2 run of their own led by 5'6" freshman point guard George Pena (23 points). The cathloc school team would push their lead back to a wobbly double-digits.
At the start of the third quarter, Scanlon maintained a 39-33 advantage but FDA made one final push with yet another 9-2 run, reducing Scanlon's lead to two points.
The combo of Pena and Nwankwo would again step up to the plate for Scanlon along with Dewey spiking their point spread to 17 going into the final quarter.
Rodriguez, who provided the vast majority of FDA's firepower throughout the game, continued putting on a shooting clinic but as a team, they had no answer for Scanlon's multiple questions
Deer Park cracks Acorn, 42-39
It would be a low scoring game for both teams mostly due to a poor shooting percentage rather than a defensive effort. Acorn would take an early 3 point lead after the first quarter and maintain a 19-16 lead at the half as junior Jeremiah Spencer (9 points) paced his squad.
Deer Park was at a disadvantage as one of their go-to-guy's, Keith Williams, was M.I.A. on an unofficial visit to LaSalle according to head coach John McCaffrey.
The Long Island based team was still able to turn the tide as 5'10" junior point guard Aaren Edmead (8 points) ran the offense. With an ongoing defensive presence and points in the paint by 6'8" Rome Jenkins (11 points), Deer Park would finally take a one point lead to start the fourth quarter.
Throughout the quarter, the game remained close as junior Brendon House (8 points) and senior Kareem Brown (8 points) scored late for Acorn. Kaleb Bradford (14 points) responded with 8 fourth quarter points for Deer Park.
With 40 seconds left to play, Acorn was down by only three and had possession of the ball. Head coach Kenny Prentlow crafted a play but a flaw in the half court execution of said play would cause a turnover, ending the chance of going into overtime.
