The Brooklyn Ballers 17-under team kicked off their iS8/Nike season by stunning the Playaz of New Jersey, 95-83. In an intense, well-played game that featured tough defense, good shooting, and lots of dunks, the up-and-coming Ballers withstood a late rally by the Playaz, led by St Anthony's Dominic Cheek and St. Benedicts Tamir Jackson, and Philly's Maalik Wayns.
The Ballers featured a well-balanced attack led by 6'4' wing Dion Waiters (23 pts,7 rebs.,6 assists, and 6 steals), 6'3' point guard Lamount Samuells (20 pts, 6 assists, 3 steals), and 6' 5' power forward, Derrick Rendell (12pts., 20 rebs.,5 blocks).
Gavin Scott and Sammy Obetoh both scored in double figures, and made clutch buckets at the end to close out the game, and Jamaal Gill and Nigel Henderson played well off the bench.
Most recently, the Brooklyn Ballers won the GymRat Challenge going undefeated and defeating NYCHoops #3 ranked New Heights along the way.
According to Program Director and Coach Gary Sheares, the Brooklyn Ballers started out as Aneesas Sports in 2003. Players on their team included Jamine "Greedy" Peterson, Keith Spellman, Brandon Romain, David Imes and Chaz Williams.
The program reimerged as the Brooklyn Ballers in 2007 and currently tout a 13-3 record and will be participating in the Rumble in the Bronx and the adidas Super 64 in Vegas.
Look for the Brooklyn Ballers to crack the NYCHoops Top Ten soon.
