Smith drops 60 to break record

'All Game' was facing a must-win situation, Sunday in the Funsport Brooklyn HS Classic and Canarsie HS stayed close for most of the first half.
But then Russ Smith decided it was time to take over and the result was a new tourney scoring record and a 103-74 victory that keeps All Game alive in the playoff hunt.

Smith outscored Canarsie by himself in the second half, 44-41, to finish with 60 points, eclipsing the record of 51 points held by Corey Fisher, now at Villanova. The Molloy HS standout knocked down five threes while scoring on an assortment of drives and put backs, and recorded 11 rebounds to complete his double-double performance.
Overshadowed in the scoring onslaught by Smith was the 34-point, 10-rebound performance by Canarsie's Sammy Haigler, while Reynaldo Walters added 15 points and 10 assists for All Game.
The bleachers at Jefferson HS were filled for the late afternoon game between defending champion Usual Suspects and Starrett City. After leading just 46-41 at the half, the Suspects completed dominated the paint and pulled away in the final quarter for a 98-74 triumph. Derrick Williams led the way with 33 points and 21 rebounds as the Suspects out-rebounded Starrett by a 59-23 margin. Sean Johnson was next with 19 points and Thaddeus Hall had 14 points for the winners. Brandon Frazier topped Starrett with 28 points while Chaz Williams just missed a triple-double with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists.
The B-Ballers assured themselves of a playoff spot by holding off Positive Direction 78-72. The Ballers held a 36-28 halftime margin before Positive Direction used a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter to move in front 47-46 on a three-pointer by Chaz Morrish of St. Mary's. However, the Ballers regained control and sealed the win with a left-corner three by Ross Vizcaino that made it 71-64 with 1:51 left in the game.
Jeff Arzu had a team-high 23 points and 9 assists for the Ballers. Positive Direction's Maurice Barrow had game-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.
Brooklyn Express built a 32-18 halftime advantage and coasted to a 60-45 victory over St. Edmund's. Omar St. John scored 21 points and Quamaine Moore tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Express. St. Edmund's received 27 points and 13 rebounds from Vinny Marchiano, and 12 assists from Brian Garvey.
In Saturday's action: Derek Williams scored 28 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to lead Usual Suspects to an 85-58 romp over B-Ballers, which received 17 points and 8 assists from Jeff Arzu. . . Team Hersh rolled over Brooklyn Express 109-40 behind David Coley (22 points), Eric Turpin (20 points), Kasheim Alston (17 points), Keith Spellman (15 points) and Bryan Hyman (15 points). . . James Stukes netted 23 points and had 7 assists to spark the Raiders past Next Level 112-61.
