Bayside sends Satellite Academy into orbit, 61-54
The players from the Bayside Commodores may be small in the backcourt and smaller than last season in the frontcourt but that didn't impede them from handling business against Satellite Academy.
The score was neck and neck throughout the first half with Bayside holding a 2 point advantage going into the third quarter. That's when the tandem of point guard Cantrell Barker and guards Daquise Andrews (6pts/5rebs/5ast) and Tyler Whitehead (22pts/3stls/3reb/1ast) took it up a notch and singed Satellite in transition, taking a 46-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
As Bayside sat back and admired their work, Stephen Wilson (21pts/4reb) and Steven Tingman (13pts/8rebs/4ast) went to work and closed the gap with a 9-2 run. With point guard Kevin Diaz (5pts/1reb/1stl/2ast) pushing the pace, suddenly an 11 point lead was down to a deuce.
Brandin King (6pts/3reb/2stls/1ast) would help push Bayside's lead back to 7 points with less than 2 minutes left to play. Diaz would make one last run slicing Bayside's lead to 3 points with 1:19 but after a few missed opportunities, Satellite was reduced to fouling and hope for misses at the charity stripe. Misses that never materialized. Next up for Bayside? Boys & Girls in the semis.
South Shore lights up Paterson Eastside (NJ), 82-67
Dubbed as the favored to advance to the championship round, Paterson Eastside had a rude awakening when they came up against Brooklyn's South Shore squad.
Bombarded on both ends of the floor, the New Jersey team found themselves down 10-2 at the top of the quarter and still down 21-9 at the start of the second quarter.
While Eastside show flashes of competiveness with Tommy Rivera (7pts/6ast/2stls) leading the break and St. Patrick junior wing Elijah Davis (26pts/5rebs/1stl) finishing strong inside, they had no answer for Shamiek Sheppard (10pts/5rebs/2ast) and big man David Tait (17pts/4rebs/1ast/1blk). At the halfway point, South Shore was still ahead by 13 points.
In the third quarter, South Shore PG Terrence Samuel (19pts/3reb/4ast) took his game to a high division I level and toyed with Eastside's defenders as he either facilitated buckets by Shepard, Tait and other teammates or knocked down points in transition. When the dust had settled in the third quarter, Paterson Eastside's hole had enlarged to 21 points.
South Shore briefly took their foot off Eastside's neck allowing their reserves to get some run. Davis would graciously accepted the brief reprieve and cut his team's deficit to 16. In the end, it was all Brooklyn as South Shore advanced to meet Christ the King in the semis.
