BROOKLYN, NY - The 2014 Rose Classic Super Jam was back in action at Nazareth High School this weekend.
NYCHoops.net was in attendance on Saturday, providing brief recaps of three games that featured top teams and talent from the New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut areas.
St. John Villa Academy (Staten Island) Tops Medgar Evers College Preparatory (Brooklyn)
In the first tilt, St. John Villa Academy used a complete, cohesive team effort to edge the PSAL'S Medgar Evers College Prep, 47-42. Seniors Sam Fleecker and Dorothy O'Neil led the Bears with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Freshman Danielle Patterson, a star in the making, paced the Lady Cougars with 17.
Archbishop Wood (PA) soundly beats Moore Catholic High School (Staten Island)
It wasn't much of a contest, as Archbishop Wood doubled up the Lady Mavericks, playing in its second game in 18 hours, 34-17, at the half. From there, the Pennsylvania powerhouse cruised to a dominate 60-39 victory.
Sophomore Bailey Greenberg, a player with Division I potential, drained a game-high 22 points for the Waminster, Pennsylvania school. Senior Gabby Rubin scored a team-high 14 for Moore Catholic while junior center Dina Motrechuk contributed 10 in the loss.
St. Mary's (L.I.) Upset by Capital Prep (CT)
In what was the most competitive affair of the three games, Capital Prep outlasted NYCHoops.net #5 ranked St. Mary's, 56-50. Junior Kiah Gillespie lit up the scoreboard with a contest-high 29 points for the Connecticut institution. Junior Mei-Lyn Bautista, who drained two deep treys near the end of the game to help bring her squad to within striking distance, led St. Mary's with 27 points.
