Rice Wins SNY Chip Over Cardozo

Cardozo was looking to piggyback on their impressive victory against Lutheran. Rice was looking to build off of difficult win over Boys & Girls HS. After winning for the entire game, the Judges would relinquish both the lead and the game to the Raiders, 63-58, in overtime.
The Judges struck first as Reynaldo Walters (8 points & 3 assists) scored transition. Kadeem Jack (19 points & 10 rebounds) put up points for Rice but Malcolm Brooks (15 points) drained threes followed by an inside bucket from Ryan Rhoomes (14 points & 11 rebounds) giving the Judges a 10-4 lead. Dozo matched Rice height-wise which made for an interesting game. Early on Rhoomes got 2 blocks on Jack and kept the Judges up by 10 with 3:47 left and maintained an 18-8 lead as the quarter closed.

Dozo did a good job keeping Rice's bigs extended and Brooks splashed his third three-pointer to give the Judges a 23-10 lead. Richard Council (6 points & 7 rebounds) and Shane Southwell (6 points & 8 rebounds) contained the damage with Raiders garbage points but continued to chase the Judges throughout the quarter.
Dozo maintained a 23-14 cushion with 3:32 on the clock but a 3 pointer by Jermaine Sanders (12 points) closed the gap. Jack would fly through with a dunk off a miss and Rice was within 4 points with 1:09 left in the half. Things got heated with 6.8 on the clock as Dwayne Brunson (18 points & 12 rebounds) received an intentional foul and extended the Judges lead to 7 points. And give them possession. Brunson would score a floater on the inbound to push Cardozo's lead to 9 points at the half.
The Raiders were on the low end of a 33-24 game and live and die on the belief that they will prevail in the later rounds. At the half, the Judges were even with Rice with 18 rebounds but shot a better FG percentage at 50% compared to the Raiders 31.3%.
Dozo's length ironically bothered Rice and with 3:15 left in the third had extended their lead to 43-26 as Rhoomes scored a putback on Jack. Dozo's lead approached 19 points before Jahmeek Jones (4 points) nailed a 3-ball that started a 8-0 Rice run. Brunson ended the quarter with an emphatic dunk, keeping Dozo ahead 47-36.
The Judges kept the pressure on and with 5:33 in the game were still ahead 49-40. Crashing the boards, Jack cut the lead to 6 points at the 4:45 mark as Rice upped the ante. Full court pressure caused turnover and a three pointer by Scottie Arias (12 points) pulled the Raiders to within a point at 51-50 with 3:16 left in regulation.
Rhoomes would give Dozo a 3 point lead from the charity stripped and a foul by Sanders on Chris Gayot (1 point & 3 assists) added another point. 1:55 and Dozo held on to a slim 54-50 lead. Jack scored on a hook. A traveling violation and a foul on Arias taking a 3 put the guard on the line. Arias would go 2-3 to tie the game at 54 with 43.6 on the clock. With either team able to score the game went into overtime.
Sanders would score the first basket in OT. A three pointer giving Rice their first lead followed by another with 1:20 to put Rice up 5 points with 58.6 left in the game. Down 59-55, Brunson pulled Dozo to with 3 from the free-throw line and Walters would go 1-2 to cut Rice's to a point. Jack would in turn drop 2 from the line and Rice would pull out the win.
Jack would capture the MVP with Brunson getting the Sportsmanship award.
