Wings whacks back Saunders, 61-49
Wings Academy was minus Desure Buie who was nursing a quad injury but with Jessie Govan as the man in the middle, the Bronx public school would still be able to dispense with Saunders.
With off-guard Randy Corporan running the point and talented 6'1" sophomore Boubacar Kimissoko adding firepower, Wings led from start to finish. Due to some pre-season hiccups, it would not be a cake walk until the final quarter Wings Academy
DJ Felder and Dylan McMillan provided and offensive spark for the Yonkers, NY team but in the end they had no answer for Georgetown bound Govan.
Govan led Wings with 19 points with Kamissoko adding 13 points. McMilian was high man for Saunders with 14 points.
Major win for Gompers over Deer Park, 46-40
A temporarily undersized Deer Park battled an undersized Gompers in the second game of the evening.
Gompers zone-defense stumped Deer Park early but perimeter shots by 6'3" sophomore Darien Jenkins and pressure defense eventually gave the Long Island a two point lead to start the second.
A height reinforcement, 6'6" senior Tyler Pierre arrived in the second quarter for Deer Park but Gompers kept the game close with transition points. At the half, Gompers held a 1 point advantage off a bucket from Kevin Major.
Gompers was a feisty bunch, using tenacity to compensate for their lack of size and tied the game at 28 to start the final quarter.
Deer Park suddenly found themselves trailing as Major sparked Gompers but with 1:40 left. The game was again knotted at 35. The lead changed hands down the stretch as each team stepped up on defense but Major came up major in the final minutes, giving Gompers a five point lead with 1:05.
Deer Park would fall down by 8 before they received offense from Jenkins. In hustle-mode, Deer Park would get it Down to 4 points with 11 seconds left in regulation but it would be Too little too late for the L.I. Squad.
Major led all scorers with 22 points. Jenkins was the high man for Deer Park with 20 points.
