By this point, the elite teams have emerged from the pack and it provides an exciting weekend of challenges from underdogs and head-to-head showdowns with the elite programs. Here are recaps Friday's games which featured New York based teams and/or players.
NY Lightning edge NJ Playaz Club in OT, 75-73
In the first game of the day we got a chance to see three of New York's top junior shooting guards as well as a NY versus NJ match-up. Isaiah Whitehead played with the Playaz Club while Khadeen Carrington and Mike Williams rolled with the Lightning.
While Isaiah Briscoe and Whitehead drove the Playaz offense, the Lightning responded with a balance scoring attack by Carrington, Williams along with Angel Delgado.
The Lightning would lead at the half, 35-33 while only shooting 39.4% compared to 42.3% by the Playaz Club.
In the second half, the Playaz made a play as Briscoe stepped up his offense and Whitehead got a key steal. The game would head into overtime tied at 65 but stellar 75% shooting in OT versus 30% from the Playaz would give the Lightning the two point win.
Williams led the way with 22 points (8-17 FG, 3-8 3PT, 3-3 FT) and 2 assists with Delgado adding a double-double 15 points (7-15 FG, 1-4 FT) and 16 rebounds. Carrington scored 14 points (6-13 FG, 0-3 3PT, 2-2 FT) and 4 assists. Briscoe scored a game high 31 points for NJ Playaz while Whitehead added 23 points (9-20 FG, 4-9 3PT, 1-2 FT) and 1 assist.
Team Scan (NY) Depletes Expressions Elite (MA), 68-50
Scan came out and took control of this game early. Cheick Diallo continues his outstanding play on both offense and defense resulting in Expression Elite landing in a 25-20 hole at the half.
In the second half, behind aggressive play in the paint by Chris McCullough along with baskets in transition by Shavar Newkirk, Scan's lead exploded in the second half en route to an 18 point victory.
Diallo scored a game high 16 points (6-8 FG, 4-5 FT) and 12 rebounds with Newkirk and McCullough adding 13 points (4-7 FG, 0-2 3PT, 5-8 FG) and 10 points (3-4 FG, 01 3PT, 4-10 FT) respectively. Jared Wilson-Frame led Expressions with 16 points.
Albany City Rocked by Team Takeover (DC), 84-54
Albany City Rocks (NY) ran into a brick wall from DC as Team Takeover took over the game early and never looked back. Down 45-26 at the half, City Rocks had no answer for the five Team Takeover players that finished with double-digit scoring. Conversely, only Sterling Taplin was able to score double-digits for the Albany City Rocks.
Solid defense by Takeover resulted in a highly contentious match-up as a frustrated City Rocks team committed an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers. In the end, it was a blowout.
James Palmer led Team Takeover with 15 with Dion Wiley contributing 14. Taplin was high man for City Rocks with11 points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3PT, 3-4 FT) with Elijah Burns dropping 9 points (3-6 FG, 3-6 FT).
