The league features 12U, 14U & 16U for boys and girls. Two games are simultaneously played.
Monday's main course saw the home court Bunky Reid All-Stars fall to the Reach One Teach One (ROTO) Hawks, 53-46. Westbury would squander an early lead, play catch up and ultimately be held off by the inside presence of Rice HS' 6'8 rising senior, Kadeem Jack, late in the game.
Bunky Reid -who were technically the Westbury HS team in both coaching and personnel (sans energy man and defensive stopper Lamard Herron)- were clearly over matched in the front court by Jack and rising junior Hakeem Ali. However, they made up for it with their patented diamond press and still managed to snag rebounds early in the game. Rising junior Sheldon Hagigal -even at 6'0- was able to muscle in buckets amongst ROTO's front line, and when rising senior Paris Abrams cashed in off of two quick diamond press induced steals, Bunky Reid held a 19-10 lead. Their second unit would get some burn late in the first half, but ROTO used the line up switch as an opportunity to creep back into the game. Three free throws in a row by Jack would cap a 10-1 run, and the game would be tied at 22 at the half.
Three point sharp shooting from Hagigal would keep Bunky Reid in the mix for half of the third quarter, but they would begin to falter at the hands of a balanced scoring effort from ROTO. Late arrival Tony Wilson used his strength and three point shooting for an extra boost, and the fact that Bunky Reid only had one player over 6-foot-2 was an omen that would eventually allow Jack to haunt them in the paint. Although Josh Golson's fourth quarter offensive groove pulled Bunky Reid within one, 45-44, they would fail to get over the hump. Hagigal would misfire on a game tying free throw, and Jack would consequently take over in the waning minutes. Despite the double teams, he was able to spin free, receive passes and throw down effortless point blank dunks in traffic. Jack and Wilson would be responsible for ROTO's final 10 points of the game, as the late charge sealed the deal.
Kadeem Jack's 19 points paced the ROTO Hawks, while Tony Wilson contributed 12. Sheldon Hagigal and Paris Abrams led the Bunky Reid All-Stars with 11 points each.
Bunky Reid Park is located at Railroad and Urban Avenues in Westbury, NY.
