In a turnover filled game, Mt. Vernon had fewer turnovers than their opponent and pulled away late for a 58-49 win.
Isaiah Cousins was the only player to score in double figures for Mt. Vernon, finishing with a game high 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting, including two three-pointers. Cousins, who also added 5 rebounds, was named MVP of the game.
The game was close at the half, with Mt. Vernon on top 28-26, but Cardozo was never able to make it a game after they fell behind by six halfway through the third quarter. They never were in sync, repeatedly turning the ball over and Mt. Vernon took full advantage, scoring 26 points off of turnovers in the game.
Mt. Vernon never looked like they were in trouble. They went up by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, and the lead never went under four points. The inability of Cardozo's guards to handle the ball and numerous bad passes that went out of bounds doomed the Queens school. That and the fact they lost one of the best players in the city when junior forward Jermaine Lawrence decided to transfer out of Cardozo to a school in New Jersey. It was a good effort, but ultimately not enough.
Cardozo's Ryan Yearwood was given the sportsmanship award, finishing with a team high 12 points.
