Lions Blow Thru Gaels to Advance

In a battle of the boroughs, Bishop Loughlin of Brooklyn was able to take control of the game early and clobber All Hallows of the Bronx on Thursday night in a CHSAA intersectional quarterfinal.
The Lions of Bishop Loughlin left no doubt in anyone's mind who would take this game on Thursday evening inside the gymnasium of St. Francis Prep, as they showed their talent was just too much for the Bronx school. The Loughlin backcourt of senior James Johnson and sophomore Doron Lamb were able to push the ball at a furious pace early in the game. However, it was a dunk from Drexel-bound big man Kevin Phillip that gave Coach Khalid Green's team a 17-7 lead with 2:32 to go in the first quarter.

In addition, with sophomore big man Jayvaughn Pinkston playing solid defense on 6'7" Devon Collier, the Gaels were left with very few other sources of points. As the Brooklyn school was able to hold a cushy 25-12 lead heading into the second frame, the Loughlin front court of Phillips and Trevon Hamlet ran the floor like gazelles and were often rewarded with fast break lay up and dunk opportunities.
With the Lions dominating in the paint and the scoring prowess of the sophomore guard Lamb, Loughlin was able to continue ballooning their lead on the scoreboard. With 5:30 to go in the first half, Doron Lamb was able to take the ball to the rack and finish while getting fouled to increase his squad's lead to 39-17. With a 52-35 lead heading into the locker room at halftime, Bishop Loughlin was led by Trevon Hamlet with 13 points and Doron Lamb with 12 points. The lanky sophomore Collier led All Hallows with 11 points in the first half.
Despite their sizeable lead, Coach Green's squad continued to attack the interior of the Gaels defense, as the Lions continued to dominate on the glass and in the paint. All Hallows headman John Carey tried to use full court pressure to force the Lions to turn the ball over, however the Brook/Queens Diocesan champions were able to break the press without much difficulty. After taking a 73-40 lead by the time the third quarter buzzer sounded, Coach Green decided to slowly empty out his bench and let the reserves see some time in a playoff basketball atmosphere on their way to a 73-40 victory.
Bishop Loughlin will face Christ the King on Wednesday evening on the campus of St. John's University in the CHSAA Intersectional semifinals.
