NEW YORK, NY - Over the weekend some of the top national players from the Class of 2015 -2017 descended on Baruch College to participate in the Jim Couch National Training Showcase.
On Saturday, the players were part of a training combine where they met with players such as NBA star of Ron Artest a/k/a Metta World Peace (NY Knicks).
Sunday, NYCHoops.net checked out an exciting game between the Class of 2016 (and a few 2017) in which the Black Team won handlely, 105-87
In addition, we've provided premium video highlights from some of the game's top performers.
In the opening quarter, the Red Team moved ahead 25-20 paced by strong play from Unique McLean, Bryce Aiken and Omari Spellman. The 6'7" Spellman, who came off a visit on Saturday to Manhattan College, not only displayed his improved inside play but also his range from the perimeter.
In the second quarter, Payton Pritchard and 6'1" Justice Kithcart (Hillside HS (NC)) put on a show and a driving layup by Prichard gave the Black team their first lead. The Red Team would fight back fueled by 3-balls from 6'0" Rashound "Ray" Salnave (Cardozo HS (NY)), Rawle Alkins and Ty Jerome to regain the lead at the midway point of the game.
Down 46-45 to begin the third quarter, the Black Team took their game to another level as 7'0" forward Thon Maker shocked and awed the crowd with his diverse skill-sets. The seven footer showed his younger brother, 6'9" Matur Maker (Carlisle HS (VA)/2017) on the opposing team how it was done. He brought the ball up court, split traps, went coast to coast, blocked shots emphatically and even knocked down three-balls. Maker's performance prompted the MC to speak to the big man's upside saying, "He is a millionaire in the making."
Even though Alkins and McLean had a solid quarter for the Red Team, the Black Team gained momentum as the crowd got pumped. With the attack of Maker, the aerial barrage from Pritchard and inside play from 6'6" Hassahn French (Life Center (PA)/2017), the Black Team not only regained the lead but led by 8 points to start the final quarter.
Maker also dominated the fourth quarter. That along with firepower from 6'5" Austin Harriot (Germantown Friends (PA)) and Temple Gibbs soon put the Black Team up by 18 points with 6:22 left to play. A lead that would hold until the end.
Maker and Pritchard won Co-MVP honors scoring 18 and 22 points respectively. McLean dropped 20 points for the Red Team.
