Hungry for pre-season high school basketball action, fans flocked to the Intermediate School 8 gymnasium to get their appetites satisfied.
The lit hardwood floor featured two nightcaps with four local squads. The winners of the lopsided victories were decided early, as the skill-sets, talent and energy of the victors were too much for their respective opponents.
Let's take a look at two brief recaps of the matchups.
N.Y. Elite Trounces Impact, 66-41
Impact, which contains players from Campus Magnet High School (N.Y.), proved no match for N.Y. Elite, which is primarily consisting of players from Our Savior New American High School (N.Y.). N.Y. Elite had both speed and quickness in the backcourt as well as a formidable presence in the frontcourt at both the '4' and '5' positions. Although N.Y. Elite's Kassoum Yakwe (Our Savior New American High School (N.Y.) '16) was a solid contributor, defensively, the team was truly led by the long, preventing arms of Cheick Diallo (Our Savior New American High School (N.Y.) '15).
Diallo's structure provided a means for his squad to get extra opportunities on the offensive end, either by swatting away an opponent's shot attempt or racking up rebounds.
N.Y. Elite's Omar Williams (Benjamin Cardozo High School (N.Y.) '13) mainly carried the offensive weight. Williams, receiving nice feeds from teammate Kevin Little (Our Savior New American High School (N.Y.) '14), was the power in the back of N.Y. Elite. In fact, the efforts of Williams gave the team a 13-point advantage, 26-13, by the 6:12 mark of the second quarter.
N.Y. Elite's margin later increased to as much as 21 points, 39-18, by halftime.
Stacking points with relative ease, N.Y. Elite held its largest lead of the contest when Diallo cashed in on a basket in the second half of the matchup. The play gave his team a 26-point lead, 55-29.
N.Y. Elite's Williams led all scorers with 20 points (14 points in the first half), while teammate Tenie Johnson (Campus Magnet (N.Y.) '13), who got involved in the action more consistently in the second half, added 12 points. Diallo and Yakwe finished with 10 and nine points, respectively. Meanwhile, Impact's Nohah Vickers (Campus Magnet (N.Y.) '14) finished with a team-high 14 points.
Team Price Spikes Brooklyn Ballers, 78-46
Brooklyn Ballers (N.Y.) attempted to keep up with Team Price (N.Y.) in the early minutes of the first quarter. Initially, Brooklyn Ballers did a solid job at shutting Team Price out the middle for points and rebounds. However, the Ballers did not remain consistent on defense, as Team Price turned up its hustling ability up and down the court.
The Brooklyn Ballers found themselves chasing the competition on the ball and off the ball, instead of staying in front of their opponents like they were doing effectively in the opening minutes of the game.
Being one of the bigger men on the floor for Team Price, Daniel Janel (Benjamin Cardozo High School (N.Y.) '13) seemed to be a little overwhelmed by the opposition walling up against him in the middle early on. However, as time progressed, Janel adapted. He was able to contribute off the glass and in the scoring department. Intangibly, Janel exhibited a lot of toughness in preventing the Brooklyn Ballers from doing what they wanted to do inside the paint.
Thanks to some help from Kyle Credle (Benjamin Cardozo High School (N.Y.) '13), Team Price was able to successfully maneuver the ball around through quick passes for high-percentage shots. Meanwhile, teammate Darnell Holmes (Benjamin Cardozo High School (N.Y.) '13) used dribble penetration and rack attack to put points on the board. Holmes became the most active force to matchup against because of his ability and will to score.
Following a few small runs, Team Price led Brooklyn Ballers 37-20 at halftime. The surge continued into the second half when Team Price accumulated an advantage of as much as 30 points, 64-34, in the fourth quarter.
Team Price's Holmes finished with a game-high 27 points, while teammates Janel and Credle added nine and eight points, respectively. Brooklyn Ballers' Jaquan Amgevine (Boys & Girls High School (N.Y.) '14) had a team-high 14 points, while teammates Matthew Banton (East New York Transit Tech (N.Y.) '13) and Mikequan Campbell (Boys & Girls High School (N.Y.) '15) added 11 and seven points, respectively.
