The Empire State showdown between Half Hollow Hills West and Christ the King was one of the best games of the day.
In a hard fought game, Hills West, the #1 ranked team in Long Island, bested Christ the King, which is a top ranked team in NYC, 73-69.
Hills West jumped out to a 16-10 lead through eight minutes, but Tennessee-signee and McDonald's All-American Tobias Harris '10 picked up his third foul early in the second quarter and had to sit for 7+ minutes, allowing the Royals to climb back into it. Led by Dominykas Milka '10 and Omar Calhoun '12, CTK took a 34-33 lead into the intermission.
Harris came back in the third quarter and had a major impact, blocking a number of shots and also scoring at the other end. With Tavon Sledge '11 doing a great job running the offense and with CTK shots not falling, it looked like Hills West might be able to run away with it. Up seven to start the fourth quarter, Hills West saw Tobias pick up his fourth foul with 6:21 left and then he fouled out with 1:53 to go. Three of his fouls were offensive.
Calhoun, who was the go-to guy for the Royals all day, fought to bring his team back, getting some help from Maurice Barrow '10 and Milka, but it was not enough. Tyler Harris '12 iced the game with a late free throw to give the Colts a 73-69 victory.
Tavon Sledge (23 points, 7/14 FG, 9/12 FT, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers) and Tobias Harris (19 points, 8/11 FG, 3/4 FT, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 7 blocks) were named co-Most Outstanding Players for Half Hollow Hills West. Omar Calhoun (24 points, 7/20 FG, 1/4 3P, 9/11 FT, 9 offensive rebounds, 11 total rebounds) was the honoree for Christ the King.
