Girls: Tougas schedules visit but is in no rush to decide

As 6'1" guard Sophie Tougas '20 continues to make her mark as an all around threat from the backcourt and on the wings, it's become clear that she is more than capable of performing at a very high level moving forward.

There were times in the past that Tougas was put into a role of just being a spot up shooter but in her eyes that is no more. She has a point to prove that being a shooter is just one aspect of her game, wanting to go out and show exactly what she can do on the offensive end all over the floor.

"During my high school years I've been pushed out on the wing a lot and I kind of fell into the spot up shooter role," Tougas admitted. "I want to get back to doing more things and I'm focused on my dribbling and getting to the basket a lot more."

Understanding that if you wants to really make an impact on the college level she had to be more than just that perimeter threat, Tougas has taken it upon herself to put in long hours in the gym and make sure that her handle, her strength, and her ability to make plays in the open court are where she knows they need to be.

That isn't to say shooting isn't going to be a big part of her game as at the GymRat Challenge a couple weeks ago it was Tougas's shooting touch that helped Mass Rivals Adidas Gauntlet team win the Platinum Division title. She scored 24 points in the opening round and hit on five three pointers, and then combined for six more three's in the semifinals and title game combined as she showed that even as she grows out her game, the shooting touch will always be there.

In terms of her recruitment, Tougas says she is a long way from a decision though she does have a visit coming up this weekend to Cal State Bakersfield to see how the West Coast would fit her, while Towson and a number of others are still in the mix as well.

It's easy and Tougas says there is no set list as she doesn't know yet still where she will be attending her senior year of high school. She had planned to attend Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut but a coaching change there has her unsure with Bradford Christian Academy in Massachusetts now the favorite to be the school she ends up at as they are coached by Scott Hazelton, her AAU coach with Mass Rivals.

Knowing that Hazelton would put her to be the best player she can be, that is a situation that Tougas knows would benefit her though it's not 100% to happen as she wants to meet and talk to the new Putnam Science staff as well.

As someone who is still uncommitted and unsure of her future Tougas admits there is some pressure to the situation she is in but she remains confident that when a decision is made it will be the best decision for her with the best of her game still to come.

"I feed off the pressure and I take it as incentive to push myself and work even harder so I'm ready to go out every time and give it the best I can," Tougas said.
