Being a dominating 6'4" post presence has made JeAnna Cunningham (St. Francis Prep '20) one of the most intriguing and highly recruited players in New York in the Class of 2020.
She was a major force to deal with each time out this summer on the Under Armour Association circuit playing with iExcel team, but while individual success came to Cunningham it was the fact that iExcel didn't achieve the level of team success that they expected that made her feel as if it wasn't an AAU season she was proud of.
"We had big shoes to fill," Cunningham said in talking about the strong 2018 AAU capping iExcel had at the top level. "Individually I'm happy but I'm not happy with my team play because we didn't do as well as I had hoped and I don't think we played to the standards of iExcel."
That is something that Cunningham said will stick with her for a while though she is trying to focus on the positives that did come out of playing on the summer circuit even if the wins didn't pile up the way she had hoped.
One positive that Cunningham said did come her way was the fact that she was able to get stronger and become a more consistent finisher inside compared to years past. She has added muscle to her frame and thinks that will help her going forward as she pushes toward being someone who can make an immediate impact on the college level.
It's not just her ability to be a back to the basket weapon though as Cunningham says she wants to be someone who breaks the mold. At 6'4" she has been pigeonholed as someone who will be a center and someone who will play down low more often than not, but Cunningham feels she can be so much more still.
"Being a post player is hard because you don't get the ball a lot and people just say she can rebound and block shots but me I want to be a presence," Cunningham stated. "I want to be someone where they have to worry about me all over the floor. I think I can be a forward or a point center which is why I'm working more on my ballhandling and my shooting, and really everything."
If the skill set in Cunningham's game continues to grow then she easily could become one of the more talked about and watched players moving forward.
After a strong summer Cunningham is now down to a final five schools of Rutgers, West Virginia, Boston College, Illinois, and Central Florida. She has an official visit to UCF planned for this coming weekend and then it will be decision making time for her with an announcement date already planned for October 9th at 3:30pm at St. Francis Prep.
Cunningham says she doesn't know as of yet where she will be headed off to as after her final visit she will sit down with her family and coaches and will discuss what situation will be best for her, but wherever Cunningham does wind up expect them to be getting a dangerous weapon inside, and someone who is determined to work as hard as possible to prove herself as a versatile weapon whose best game is still to come.
