Funsport Junior Pros Recaps Week 3

The third week of regular season action of the Funsport Junior Pros at JHS 113 in Brooklyn featured an early-morning matchup of unbeaten squads, Starrett City getting its first real test, Shep Garner leading Above and Beyond to a pair of easy wins in his Junior Pros debut, and Brooklyn Ballers-A rolling to their fourth straight win.

In the Saturday opener, the New Jersey Pirates remained undefeated and handed the Brooklyn Ballers-B their first loss by controlling the fourth quarter and posting a 45-37 victory.
The Ballers led 11-10 after the first quarter and got a Darius James three-pointer late in the half to hold a 24-22 halftime advantage. The Pirates opened the second half with a 7-0 run and a three by Najee Luckey (Plainfield Middle, NJ) enabled them to carry a slim 34-33 margin into the final period. Led by Mike Silverthorn (St. Mary's Hackettstown, NJ) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, the Pirates (3-0) maintained the momentum over the last seven minutes. James (MS 88, Brooklyn) led the Ballers (2-1) with 13 points and 9 rebounds while Jabari Cumberbatch (MS 394, Brooklyn) added 10 points, but failed to score in the second half.
Starrett City also remained undefeated at 3-0 but had to hold off a late C-3 Elite comeback attempt before securing the 44-39 win. Starrett, behind Isaiah Whitehead (IS 288, Brooklyn) with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Thomas Holley (MS 216, Queens) with 8 points and 13 boards, led by double figures for much of the contest before C-3 rallied in the last three minutes. The Elite (1-2) pulled within 39-35 on a three-point banker by Joekim Hill with 1:14 but could get no closer in the final minute.
Above and Beyond became the first team to get to 4-0 after recording two landslide wins: 72-34 over MS 113 (1-2) and 71-41 over Positive Direction (0-3). In the first game, Shep Garner (Drexel Neumann, Chester PA) led four scorers in double digits with 16 points and 9 rebounds while Jerron Love (Riverdale, Bronx) added 12 points and 6 assists. Garner later had 22 points and 12 boards versus Positive Direction, with Love adding 15 points and 7 dimes, and Sam Foreman (Frederick Douglass, Philadelphia PA) tallying 9 assists.
Brooklyn Ballers-A also reached 4-0 with a pair of wins. Tyrone Johnson netted 16 points and Devyn Wilson scored 12 points in a 51-24 romp over Riverside-Blue (1-2), which got 10 points from Phillip Isom. Neuby Saint-Hillaire then recorded a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Ballers in a 48-32 victory over Gauchos-Mapp (1-2).
Riverside-8 is also unbeaten at 3-0 after running off to a 17-3 start en route to a 70-36 romp over Abyssinian. Daquon Ervin (MS 113, Brooklyn) led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Koree Hargraves (Thomas Jefferson, Teaneck NJ) with 13 and Giovanni Coureau (Columbia Prep, Brooklyn) with 12. Abyssinian (1-2) was led by Jaquan Hickman (MS 379, NYC) with 13 points and Shaquille White (CCS, NYC) with 12.
In other highlights: The Playaz Club swept their two games to improve to 3-1. Rip Engle scored 16 points, Nassir Barrino had 13 points and Kiy Hester added 12 in a 67-24 triumph over LI Lightning (0-3). The Playaz then survived a close one, taking a 50-48 decision over the Future Ones behind Barrino (19 points) and Hester (15 points, 12 rebounds). Future Ones (1-2) fell short despite receiving 15 points from Rashard John, 14 points from Brandon Carcamo and 13 from Anton McNeil. . . Khalik Howe (IS 131, Bronx) was the week's high scorer, dropping 27 points with 8 rebounds as Gauchos-Harris (2-1) rolled over New Heights-Red (1-2) 64-26. . . Brooklyn Ballers-B rebounded from their first loss a day earlier with a 39-38 squeaker over Elite NYC as Darius James hit the game-winner with :08 left. James finished with 18 points and 11 boards for the Ballers (3-1); Elite NYC (1-2) countered with 12 points from Abolayi Soyemi and 11 rebounds from Tristan Rosa. . . Team Underrated is now 3-1 after downing the Brooklyn Stompers (1-2) 49-27 led by Chris Davis (15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) and Kyle Williams (12 points, 6 rebounds). . . Altine King (Bay Academy, Brooklyn) and Luchi Ibbot (St. Edmund's, Brooklyn) scored 11 points apiece and St. Mark's improved to 2-1 with a 49-42 triumph over Wee All-Stars (0-3), which received a game-high 15 points from Javin Williams (Chestnut Ridge Middle, NY). . . Riverside-7 (1-2) picked up their first win, getting 4 treys and 16 points from Ellis Christmas (Fieldston, NY) in a 35-28 victory over F.Y.A. Jamie Killings (MS 327, Brooklyn) led F.Y.A. (0-3) with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
