Earlette Scott commits on her birthday

As one of the PSAL's best, 5'11" guard Earlette Scott (South Shore '18) had several colleges who made her a priority, but after a recent official visit she was sold on knowing what she wanted to do, waiting until her birthday though on Thursday morning to officially make her announcement.

It was the perfect moment in Scott's eyes, starting her birthday morning by announcing the biggest decision of her life to date, deciding that her bond with assistant coach Priscilla Edwards, along with her love for the school's campus, was enough to have her commit to Providence.

Having been one of the school's recruiting her for the longest period of time, Providence was always high up on Scott's list, but as she got to know Edwards even more, she realized that the connection and bond between them was unique.

They both were stars in the PSAL with Scott being South Shore's current leader, while Edwards was one of Frederick Douglass Academy's all-time greats as a 2003 graduate, and with it actually being both of their birthdays on Thursday, Lady Vikings head coach Anwar Gladden said he couldn't think of a more fitting day for to Scott make her commitment.

"Earlette's relationship with Priscilla and her being another PSAL product, I definitely think their bond was real close," Gladden admitted. "She actually committed a couple of days ago but we waited until this morning to announce it because it's both of their birthdays today and I always thought that would have a good meaning so I figured today would be the perfect day to commit."

What Providence sees in Scott is someone who can play the 1 to the 4 spots and bring a toughness to the court, along with versatility to score from nearly any position on the floor.

She is a weapon not just offensively, but defensively as well as she can make an instant impact in the Big East for the Friars who are looking to make their name in a league that has been dominated for the past few seasons by DePaul and St. John's, and it's Scott winning mentality that Gladden feels could be bigger for them than anything else.

"I think they see her just like the article you wrote maybe about a year ago, they just see her as a winner," Gladden stated. "Someone who will bring a winning tradition to the program."

Everywhere Scott has played she has won, be it leading South Shore to the 2017 New York State Class "AA" Federation Championship, or with the Lady Choz on the AAU circuit where she has been the key cog in making it one of their best summers in recent history.

So confident on Providence was Scott that after taking an official visit there during the first weekend of this month, she came back sold and felt as if she didn't need to see anymore. She had also taken an unofficial visit to Seton Hall, and had a date with Albany lined up, but the relationship, and the feel, she had with everyone associated with the Friars was enough for her to know that Providence was the place for her.

With the decision now behind her, Gladden is happy more than anything for Scott and her family as she now will be headed to play Division 1 basketball for the next four years, while getting a free education. That's what it's about to Gladden, who has seen many of his Lady Vikings players over the past few years move onto bigger and better things on the college level, proud to see each one of them thriving on the next level both on the court, and in the classroom.

He is confident that Scott will do big things going forward at Providence as well, believing that it's the perfect fit for his birthday girl, but before she heads off to the Big East though Scott still has her senior season for South Shore, and Gladden believes there is still a lot more winning left for her to do this year in the PSAL and beyond.

"There I'm sure are going to be some practices where I say you can go to Providence now, but I still get that sense that she has won for three years and she doesn't want to end it on a sour note," Gladden said. "She wants to go out and play her last game and have it be a winning game."

That cannot be considered a shock at all from a player in Scott who has time and time again proved herself to be first and foremost a winner. It's what she has always been about, and will continue to be about as the now future Providence star looks to leave her lasting mark in New York City.
