The Boys & Girls Kangaroos have had a tough couple of games. First, losing against St. Anthony followed by a loss to local rival, Abraham Lincoln.
On Thursday, the Roos would end their regular season at home with a must-win victory against the Thomas Jefferson Orange Wave, 58-55.
The Kangaroos would again play the game without the services of Mike Taylor, who was still unable to play due to academic issues. In need of a moral victory, Boys & Girls, would step it up a notch. "[The] regular season was a grind, especially mentally with all the off-court [stuff], " said Boys & Girls assistant coach Elmer Anderson. "We told the kids get refocused or be one and done."
The Jefferson Orange Wave would also be without the guidance of their head coach Lawrence "Bud" Pollard who was serving a two game suspension due to a double-tech in a previous game. The Orange Wave would be coached by assistant coach Sheldon Jefferson
Boys & Girls would step out in front with a 10-2 run initiated by PG Antoine Slaughter 16 points) and capped off by a jumper by Malik Nichols (14 points). Jefferson would remain on their heels down 18-8 as the second quarter began before Thaddeus Hall (8 points) sparked an Orange Wave comeback. With 3:09 left in the half, Tyquan Goodlett (8 points) would score off a drive to the rim cutting the lead to 27-25. Teyvon Meyers would temporarily stave off Jefferson's surge but Goodlett would draw a foul and knock down free-throws with 9.3 seconds slicing the Kangaroos advantage to a point.
Slaughter's 12 first half point kept Boy & Girls ahead 30-29 as the third quarter began but Eric Turpin (12 points) scored quickly, giving Jefferson their first lead but Slaughter quickly countered. Anthony Hemingway (7 points) would extend the Roos lead but Davontay Grace (11 points) would keep the game tight.
The Orange would continuously knock on the Kangaroos door but in the fourth quarter, home court advantage set in as the crowd chanted, "You can't be the high, say you can't beat The High." The Boys High squad responded and with a minute-thirty left to play, Leroy Fludd (10 points) would cause critical turnovers for the Kangaroos down the stretch as Jefferson once again pulled to within one. Nichols would nail two free-throws to seal the deal as time ran out.
