What they didn't expect was a first half scoring Hurricane but that's what they got on Friday when the Lions blew by the Long Island squad, 82-69.
"I've been shootin' it pretty well all season but this was the first time I went 100% from three," said sharpshooter Mike Williams who knocked down 26 points, 21 in the first half alone while shooting 6 of 6 from the arc.
It was a Shootout in the first quarter. Both teams were evenly matched until Williams got hot along with Khadeen Carrington (26 points & 3 assists) and pushed Loughlin ahead 23-16 to begin the second quarter.
Carrington and Williams drained treys at the top of the second quarter and like that, the Brooklyn school was up 13 points with 7:03 left in the half.
6'6" freshman Chris Coalman (15 points & 4 rebounds) and 6'5" senior Stephen Milhaven 21 points & 8 rebounds) helped stave off Loughlin's assault with points for St. Mary's but Jayvian Delacruz (12 points & 4 rebounds) dropped yet another 3-ball for the Lions.
At the half it was 46-32 Lions with Williams and Carrington scoring 37 of Bishop Loughlin's total points
The Gaels got more assertive in the third quarter and actually got the lead down to 11 points at the 5:03 mark. A trey by Milhaven and the score was 53-44 with 3:42.
Loughin attempted to reverse the trend as St. Mary's got the deficit to 8 with 2:44
Milhaven powered up and drew a foul with 1:19 and the score was 55-49.
St. Mary's had a chance to get it down to 4 points but a turnover set up a Loughlin run pushing their lead back to ten.
Loughlin carried a 61-53 lead into the fourth and Carrington and 6'8" senior A.J. Vernon (4 points & 1 rebound) immediately extended it to 12 with a layup and a post up.
Carrington began to get hot like fire midway through the quarter and with 5 minutes left to play the Lions were comfortably ahead, 71-55 and would lead by 20 with 2:30 remaining. The Gaels could only get their deficit down to 13 before time ran out.
St. Mary's will face Cardozo in the consilation game followed by St. Anthony's against Bishop Loughlin in the championship round.
