In this article, we will break down games 2 and 3 of the Bay Shore HS tournament. The event champions took on a very scrappy Roslyn HS group. William Floyd HS looked to keep their massive regular-season winning streak alive against Nassau champs Elmont HS.
Game 2
Bay Shore HS took a 16-11 first-quarter lead with 6’2” SG Corey Faines (Bay Shore HS, NY ’25) who had 8 points. The Marauders were getting their balance in scoring, holding Roslyn to one possession, and playing their style. Roslyn HS was fresh off a 20-point comeback over Holy Trinity HS and figured things out with three starters on the bench. The 6’1” G Davon White (Roslyn HS, NY ‘27) hit two big threes to keep the Bulldogs in the game.
Faines hit a pair of free throws, White hit a three for Roslyn, and Faines scored again. Roslyn was able to hit another three. Roslyn was hanging tough until Faines led another Bay Shore run but a late triple by the Bulldogs trimmed their halftime deficit to just six. Roslyn knocked down a three to cut it to three, but Faines converted an and1 and then scored on the next possession. The Bulldogs hit a shot, Faines scored inside off a miss, the teams traded free throws, and Roslyn scored but Faines answered.
Bay Shore got a bucket, a stop, and a Faine's basket forcing Roslyn into a timeout. They trailed by 10 points, Faines scored but the Bulldogs answered to keep Bay Shore’s lead to just ten headed into the fourth quarter. Both teams traded baskets, Faines scored a miss, and White scored but Faines was just too much. He kept the peddle to the medal and threw down a massage slam to end that game. Bay Shore won 61-47 and is quickly forming another deadly unit. The Marauder's pieces played well and Faines was unbelievable again finishing with 33 points. Roslyn is a team on my radar now and White led them with 11 points.
Game 3
The Colonials got off to a great start in the first quarter as their stud 5’9” PG Jermaine King (William Floyd HS, NY ‘25) got the offense going. They led 15-7 after getting multiple stops and their point guard some open looks from three. Elmont tightened up their defense adding pressure and started to force turnovers. The Spartans held Floyd to 7 points in the second quarter and got a few buckets from 6’4” W Nassir Edwards ( Elmont HS, NY ‘25).
We saw the score was 24-24 at the half and knew this was going to be a defensive battle for the final 16 minutes. Elmont was spreading the ball around, gaining momentum but just couldn’t slow down King. He continued to make shots and push the Colonials up. They controlled the pace and ended up taking a 40-35 lead after the third quarter. King hit another big shot, but Elmont was killing it on the boards and getting to the loose balls.
While William Floyd had been in control Elmont had grinded the game down to just one possession. They traded blows back in forth as the Elmont guards gave them a nice punch, but King was hot. The Colonials had a chance to go up, Elmont tied it up, and Floyd had another chance but couldn’t convert. Edwards and company dug in late to get a bucket under a minute and needed a stop. We knew King was getting it but so did the whole gym. Elmont threw everyone they could at him and forced him to take a tough two which hit the back rim.
The Spartans had hung around long enough to steal the game and seem to be finding their identity finishing 49-47. Floyd has plenty of opportunities to win this one and King was terrific. King had a game-high 33 points in the loss while Edwards led Elmont by scoring 10 points. The Spartans bounced back with a big non-league win and had contributions from everyone in the rotation. We could see these two teams win a lot of games and stay inside our top ten all season.
