It started early in the morning until the end of the night. Here are some things that happened to catch our eye.
Isaiah Whitehead played well and was outstanding in a game against Long Island Lutheran. He scored a game high 20 points and looked extremely good doing it. He was hot in the first half, quickly draining a few perimeter jumpers with a lot of confidence. The thing that made the matchup interesting was another player on the opposing team.
Whitehead also took on the challenge of defending UConn commit Kentan Facey. He did a good job against Facey despite giving up 5 inches to the 6-9 forward. In the long run, Whitehead didn't play a lot in the second half because Lincoln was comfortably ahead. Lincoln ended up winning the game 50-36. They were given the top seed in the playoffs, which began Saturday night.
Bayside pulled off a big upset despite the games being held in a tournament format. They knocked off St. Pat's 41-39, the number 2 seed in the playoffs. Consequently, Bayside was ranked 31 out of 32 teams. That is a huge upset just based on the circumstances.
Even more remarkable was Bayside only had 6 players, which means they didn't have much of a bench. Still, they were able to outlast St. Pat's. They actually held a 39-31 lead in the second half, only to see St. Pat's storm back and tie the game. Bayside was able to score the winning points at the free throw line when senior guard Austin Williams drained his most important two points with 5.1 seconds left in the game. Bayside was led in scoring by Williams with 18 points. Tyler Whitehead added 12 points for the winners.
The third and fourth seeds, Jefferson and Wings, both won their first round playoff games easily. They advance to the playoffs which will continue on Sunday morning.
