Day three of the CYP tournament kicked off, delivering the same high intensity play along with a new laundry list of star players as expected. The first semifinal game featured the NY Gauchos vs. CT Select followed by NJ Roadrunners against NY Metro. Here are the recaps.
Gauchos vs. CT Select
After an assist from Gauchos Kansas State-bound Shane Southwell to UConn-bound Maurice Harkless mid-way in the opening quarter, the score would knot at 14 apiece as both teams battled. CT Select's Jakari McCalop would break that tie scoring two off the glass giving Select a two point lead. Ct Select finish the quarter on top while keeping the Gauchos team at bay after Deshawn Murphy scored a lay-up at the close of the buzzer, Ct Select 21-19.
The score would tie up once in the second quarter after Sandro Carrisimo inbound pass to Southwell 37-37. The Gauchos would finally take the lead after a lay-up from Kelvin Amayo. Anthony Givens would push the Gauchos further ahead with another lay-up, 41-37. In the final seconds of the quarter, Amayo would get a steal and drives two in while Harkless closed out this quarter with the bucket, Gauchos 45-42.
In the third quarter the Gauchos would maintain their lead while controlling the pace of the game. In the final seconds of the quarter McCalop would get the rebound to put two on the board. However, Southwell would close this quarter with a driving lay-up giving the Gauchos a ten point lead 69-59.
The winner of this contest was clear in the fourth quarter with the Gauchos dominating in scoring closing out the game 89-79 over CT Select. On Friday, the Gauchos face the New York Falcons at 7:15.
Gauchos Maurice Harkless led in all scoring with 33 points and Kelvin Amayo contributed 23 points.
CT Select Jakari McCalop led for his team with 20 points and Anthony Ireland added 17 points.
NJ Roadrunners vs. MetroHawks
After back-to-back points by Aaron Brown put MetroHawks ahead at the minute and half mark 17-9. The Roadrunners Matt Miller would finish with a jumper at the close of the quarter with Metro up 19-13.
The Roadrunners came alive in the second quarter with Kyrie Irving and Eli Carter putting on a show. In this quarter, Irving hits a three-pointer to tie score 23-23.With a minute and a half remaining in the quarter the Roadrunners held on to a eight point lead. In the final seconds, Carter hits a long three-point jumper pushing the Roadrunners lead to 46-33.
In the fourth quarter, the Roadrunners held a ten point lead with Carter and Irving trading buckets. MetroHawks Sidiki Johnson scored two at the line but Irving would close out the quarter making a tough up and under shot, then following up with reverse lay-up. The Roadrunners held onto 12 points lead at the close of the quarter 64-52.
MetroHawks would never regain their lead, trailing throughout the fourth quarter while running into foul trouble along the way. The Roadrunners dominated this quarter, finishing this contest 90-81 and will return on Friday to play Frenji Sport in the semi-final, at 8:30.
Roadrunners Eli Carter led in all scoring with 34 points while Kyrie Irving tallied 31 points.
MetroHawk's Antoine Mason led for his team with 14 points and Sidiki Johnson and Aaron Brown finish with 13 points apiece.
