NYCHoops Top 10: Tournament Updates Pt.1

NYCHoops top ranked teams are all on the road this weekend in various tournaments throughout the U.S.

The Juice All-stars and the NY Panthers traveled to Durham, NC to play in the Bob Gibbons TOC. The NY Gauchos and the MetroHawks are at the Nike Memorial Day Classic in Newport, TN. Meanwhile New Heights, the Albany City Rocks, the L.I. Lightning-Kelly, the Westchester Hawks and the NYC Jaguars are competing in the GymRat CHALLENGE in Albany, NY.
Here are updates on their weekend progress to date:
Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (Durham, NC)
The #1 ranked Juice All-stars, coached by Dwayne "Tiny" Morton are 2-0 in pool play winning 66-58 against W.P.C. Elite of MD on Friday, with James Padgett scoring an impressive 26pts. Saturday so far Juice All-stars won 76-54 against North Carolina Force and were playing the Team Breakout from FL in their third pool play game at the time of this article.
The #3 ranked NY Panthers are 3-0 and will be advancing out of their pool and into the playoffs. According to Gary Charles, they beat the Florida Assault, 71-68 and then beat R.E.A.C.H. Legend 87-67. They also defeated the Georgia Ballers 76-58 in their final pool play game in which Omari Lawrence had 19pts and Kevin Parrom had 17pts.
Nike Memorial Day Tournament (Newport, TN)
The #4 ranked NY Gauchos are currently 2-0. They defeated the Arizona Stars 90-63 and the Tennessee Travelers 67-50. "Doron Lamb and Durand Scott have been killin'" according to Coach Mo Hicks. Each has been averaging about 24pts. The Gauchos will play the St. Louis Eagles on Sunday at 11:00am
The #6 ranked MetroHawks are currently 0-2. They loss to the Miami Tropics 66-65 off of a 3-pt buzzer beater as time ran out. Isiah Stokley scored 13pts. Derrick Williams added 10pts. and 10 rebounds.
In the second game the MetroHawks loss to the Wisconsin Elite, 55-52 with return member Chaz Williams playing well. Tomorrow, the MetroHawks play against California's Team Odom. To advance out of their pool in second place, they need to beat Team Odom and for the Tropics to lose according to assistant coach Dennis Dubois.
GymRat CHALLENGE (Albany, NY)
The #2 ranked New Heights 17U went 3-0 in pool play beating Montco Magic, 63-59, in OT according to Rudy King. They then defeated the Dunbar Mavericks, 63-59 and the NJ Shore Shots 66-55. Jonathan Williams played well as did Matt Grossbard.
The #5 ranked Albany City Rocks are 2-0 in their pool defeating the NJ Shore Shots and then beating the House of Hoops by 40pts. Taran Buie and Will Regan have played well according to Coach Carmen Macariello. Their third pool game, to advance, is Sunday at 11am.
The #7 ranked Long Island Lightning-Kelly are 1-1, beating the Boston Warriors but then losing to the Jersey Shore Warriors 60-59. Dan Kenny, P.J. Walters and Steve Jackman are having good games.
The #8 ranked Westchester Hawks are 2-0 in pool play at the GymRat CHALLENGE in Albany. Ralph Watts & Otis Anderson have played well according to Coach Phil Diasparra.
The #10 ranked NYC Jaguars are 2-0 according to Coach Kevin Hamilton. They beat the New Hampshire Hurricanes by 5pts. and then beat the New Hampshire Heat by 17pts. Keith Brooks, a junior at McClancy High School scored 22pts the first game and 17pts in the second game.
The Jaguars will be playing the Mass. Crusaders in the final game of pool play.
