Girls: Coach Chez Williams leaves New Heights

With the Live Period about to begin on Friday evening for the girl’s side of things on the AAU circuit for the last time this season there was some shocking news that came down late last week that could shift the power of Girls AAU basketball in New York City.

A long time staple of the New Heights AAU program, Chez Williams, who is also the varsity girls’ basketball coach at Bishop Loughlin H.S., recently decided to make a move to another high profile AAU team.

"I started with the New Jersey Sparks this past Monday," Williams said after being on the bench with the Sparks at the Rose Classic in Brooklyn this past weekend.

Just what this means for NYC Girls AAU basketball is something we will have to wait and see on. There is a chance that many of the girls who were affiliated with New Heights, especially on the highest 16u level, may leave the program and head to the Sparks now. That will really be found out more this coming weekend when college coaches will be out in force as the Sparks, a Nike Girls EYBL team, host the Silk City Showdown at Paterson JFK H.S. in Paterson, NJ. New Heights, a team sponsored by Under Armour, will be playing in the Zero Gravity Live at the House event at the House of Sports complex in Ardsley, NY.

Where will many of the New Heights players who played under Williams end up is the real question that many are wanting to see? Will they stay with New Heights or will they make a move along with their former coach who also was in charge of a 6th grade program at New Heights.

This development should just add to the excitement of the upcoming Live Period that should draw hundreds of Division 1 coaches into the New York/New Jersey area this weekend.
