BROOKLYN, NY – It all came down to this. On Sunday in Dean Street Park, the South Shore Vikings battled Prep 4 Prep in the Conrad McRae Youth League HS division championship. Although the PSAL school put up a good fight, the collection of Prep School players eventually overwhelmed the Vikings, 66 – 58.

South Shore took an early lead over Prep 4 Preps with Sekou Sylla and Kadary Richmond ‘18 leading the charge. Down 6 – zip, Myles Foster (Brooks School ’20) and Manessah Small (Phelps School ’18) eventually countered along with high flying guard Posh Alexander (Our Savior Lutheran '20). Initially, the best Prep 4 Prep could do was exchange baskets with the Vikings but all that changed when Justin Figuero (The Knox School '18) hit a clutch bucket that tied the game at 23 with 30 seconds left in the half. Jailen Jamison (Phelps School ’18) followed that up with a bucket that left the Vikings down 25 – 23 at the midway point.

Falling behind at the half after leading for the majority of the first half can have a chilling effect on a team. Such was the case with South Shore as Alexander added insult to injury sparking a 6 – 0 Prep 4 Prep run that resulted in the Vikings getting a tasted of its own medicine.

Prep 4 Prep’s advantage grew to 8 points before Sylla ended South Shore’s free fall with a put back on the glass. The Vikings managed to close its deficit to a bucket with 11 minutes left in regulation but Brian Kinsey (The Brooks School ‘18) strung together a series of points that re-extended Prep 4 Preps lead back to 6 points.

After being non-existent in the first half Feme Odukale came up big for South Shore in the second half. His aggressive runs at the basket chopped Prep 4 Prep’s lead down to a deuce but the Vikings porous defense was unable to stopped consistent counters from C.J. Robinson (Westminster ’20), Alexander and Small. Made free-throw down the stretch eventually stuck a fork in any chance of a comeback for South Shore.

Alexander led Prep 4 Prep with 18 points but Small would take home the MVP scoring 12 points. Robinson also added 12 points in the win. Syllas led all scorers for South Shore netting a game high 22 points with Richmond contributing 15 points.

The future looks bright for New York City basketball as the class of 2021 went at it in the Conrad McRae Middle School division championship. Impressive play from Nick Thomas in the first half gave the Addams Family a 23 – 19 first half lead even the Shooting Stars got good inside production from 6’7” Tymell Stevenson (St. Mary’s).

The second half exploits of T.J. Morris (Christ the King) and Sterling Jones (Christ the King) kept the Shooting Stars in the hunt but the collective efforts of the Addams Family proved to be too much for them to overcome.
