NEW YORK, NY – January 9, 2008 – Madison Square Garden will once again host the year-end Public Schools Athletic League Basketball Championships, it was announced today. Both boys and girls games will take place on Sunday, March 16, 2008 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Madison Square Garden in conjunction with the Mayor's Office and the PSAL, after a comprehensive review and evaluation, have agreed to continue with the championship games at Madison Square Garden.
"The PSAL is looking forward to great high school basketball championship games in a safe, family environment," said Eric Goldstein, PSAL chief executive. "We worked with Madison Square Garden to schedule games earlier in the day and for a smaller audience. We want everyone to enjoy the basketball games."
"Madison Square Garden is thrilled to continue the tradition of hosting the public high school basketball championships," said Steve Mills, president, MSG Sports. "Several procedures have been adjusted to make sure all players, schools and fans have an enjoyable and safe experience."
New this year, there will be no public sale of tickets. A maximum of 5,000 tickets will be distributed - each school will receive 750 tickets, the PSAL will receive 1,000, and MSG will receive 1,000. Additionally, the first game has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m., compared to an evening tip-off last year.
For over 100 years the PSAL has represented New York City students through the country's largest high school athletic system. The first PSAL tournament took place in 1903 at the old Madison Square Garden and saw Flushing High School win the championship.
"These high school student-athletes work so hard all season long with the hopes to play at Madison Square Garden," said Joel Fisher, executive vice president MSG Sports. "We're excited that they will once again have the opportunity to play the championship game in the World's Most Famous Arena."
In addition to the PSAL Championships, Madison Square Garden will host the January 13th Nike Super Six, which showcases high schools from New York versus New Jersey, as well as the Jordan Brand All-American Game on April 19.
