Machado to Iona

Scott Machado, a senior point guard at St. Benedict's in Newark, NJ, has verbally committed to Iona. He will sign during the late signing period in April.
The 6-2 Machado came to St. Benedict's from St. Mary's on Long Island, NY for his final season and helped the Gray Bees win 24 of 25 games, including Thursday's nationally televised victory over Benedictine (Va.) on ESPNU.

Machado averaged 6.8 points, 5.2 assists and 2.3 rebounds for the 24-1 Gray Bees.
He is the third player from a New Jersey high school to commit to Iona this season, following 6-2 Don Bosco Prep shooting guard Kyle Smyth, whose team won its third straight Bergen Jamboree, and 6-6 Hackensack forward Keon Williams, whose team lost to Bosco in the final. The Gaels also bring in 6-1 guard Trinity Fields from Cardozo in New York, and 6-7 power forward Derrick Woflley from upstate Attica (N.Y.). Kashif Pratt, a 6-4 guard out of Rice who transferred from Seton Hall, and 7-foot Louisville transfer Jonathan Huffman will also be eligible after sitting a year.
That should give coach Kevin Willard, a former Rick Pitino assistant, a nice little nucleus to make a run in the coming years.
Machado is the second St. Benedict's senior to commit this season, following 6-9 McDonald's All-American forward Samardo Samuels, who is headed to Louisville. Juniors Greg Echenique and Tamir Jackson are expected to follow suit next year.
