Knights Tame Lions in OT

On Tuesday, NYCHoops #5 ranked Holy Cross Knights faced off against the #6 ranked Bishop Loughlin Lions of Brooklyn, NY at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, NY.
It was to be a classic battle between Queens and Brooklyn, which started off as slow and deliberate game with many ticky-tac fouls but ended in an exciting event.

With Lions 6'6" star power forward Jayvaughn Pinkston absent due to school issues, 6'6" junior forward Trevon Hamlet had some large shoes to fill and as the first half ended in seemed as if Bishop Loughlin were up for the challenge as the led at the half but in the end it was Holy Cross rising to the occasion, beating the Lions in overtime, 73 – 70.
As the second half started quick scores by Sylven Landesberg gave Holy Cross the lead early in the third quarter. Ernest Freeman, Holy Cross's 6'6 senior center was effective down low although he sat much of the first half due to early foul trouble as his baskets stretch the lead to seven points.
As the Lions began to pressure the ball more they also began to rack up the fouls. James Johnson, Bishop Loughlin's senior guard picked up his fourth foul late in the third, which hampered his effectiveness while 6'1" senior guard Felix Llanos was effective as Coach Paul Gilvary utilized a deep bench rotation for The Knights.
Holy Cross guard, Blaise Ffrench penetrated with seconds left on the clock giving them a 49 – 41 lead going into the fourth.
In the fourth the Knights attacked as Landesberg, Ffrench and Llanos scored while Hamlet did work underneath the basket for Bishop Loughlin. Sophomore guard Doron Lamb was a major offensive and defensive threat for the Lions, as he seemed to lead the attack for his team showing poise beyond his years as he nails a critical two pointer to bring his team within 4.
Lamb also played tight defense against Landesberg deep into the fourth that caused Coach Gilvary to call a time out and fail to score coming out of the time out. Trevon Hamlet would score again down low while Tim Beinert would miss a key basket for Holy Cross followed by a foul on Lions 6'7" senior forward Kevin Phillip. After Phillip nailed both free throws, senior guard Devon Elliot would steal the inbound pass and score to tie the game at 62.
Coach Khalid Greene would instruct his Lions to again pressure the inbound pass which went to Tyshawn Russell which would again result in a Holy Cross time out.
Landesberg would bring the ball up court and throw a cross-court interception with 24.6 seconds left in regulation but Lamb, Elliot and Hamlet would miss up-close baskets for the win and the game would go into overtime.
To start the overtime, Kayvon Roberts would commit a turnover for Holy Cross but Devon Elliot would miss the open jumper and with 3:12 left on the clock Roberts would hit a runner to give Holy Cross the lead. Bishop Loughlin would never see the lead again as James Johnson fouled out as did as senior guard Michael Lloyd. Ernest Freeman would foul out for the Knights.
The key play of the game occurred when Ffrench inbounds to Beinert who shoots and misses a 3 pointer but Ffrench would reach over and grab the rebound and get fouled by Lamb. He would calmly hit both free throws and the Lions simply ran out of time.
Final score, 73 -70 in favor of Holy Cross. Sylven Landesberg led all scores with 36 points while Doron Lamb was the high scorer for Bishop Loughlin with 29 points.
Holy Cross record goes to 11 – 2 while Bishop Loughlin's record is now 8 – 3.
