Knights Are Champs Once Again

Only the best stepped on the court on Sunday as the physical No 1 seed the Mount Vernon Knights toppled the Poughkeepsie Rams in the Section 1 Class AA championship game at the Westchester County Center. The Knights received their eighth Sectional Championship in nine years.
When NYCHoops asked Coach Bob Cimmino does winning all the time get old? , "Hell No, It is an amazing testimony to how hard these kids work, no team practices as hard as us." Former Knight Mike Coburn surprised the newly crowned Champions and rushed into the Knights locker room to congratulate them.
The first quarter, Sherrod Wright was on fire and quickly put up 10 points and two 3-pointers. Wright then added a crashing two-handed dunk for Knights 22-11.The Knights continued to keep their lead by the second quarter, with an acrobatic play by Tyrone Mitchell who stole the ball from Poughkeepsie to make the play for two to Andre Gaynor. Mitchell continued to have back-back lay-ups putting the Knights ahead. Poughkeepsie had many miss opportunities, and too many plays intercepted by the fast pace Knights.
By the third the Poughkeepsie looked like they were coming back into the game when, Duane Clark made a nice pass. to score two. As Poughkeepsie, seem to attempt to make a come back the Knights applied the pressure with terrific teamwork by Wright and Kevin Jones. The third ended with a steal by Knight's Jabarie Hinds for a two-point lay-up.
Jones took the lead in the fourth with a two point shot and teammate Wright followed through with an athletic shot under the basket .Poughkeepsie's Clark kept the ball alive but the game was over by the start of the fourth the Knights easily took the title 75-52.
Sherrod Wright the high scorer completed with a game-high 29 points and MVP Kevin Jones added 27 points and 15 rebounds for the Knights. Poughkeepsie's Duane Clark had 17 points.
