St. Dominic High School's Paul Bilbo and PJ Walters led the Long Island Lightning-Kelly to a victory in their first game of pool play on Saturday morning. The 6-7 Bilbo scored 14 points while guard PJ Walters chipped in with 12 points to lead Coach Chris Kelly's squad to a 68-55 victory over the Boston Warriors-North.
Former City Rocks Standout Takes In GymRat
Former Bishop Maginn and current Penn State star guard Talor Battle was in attendance on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Siena College to watch his former grassroots team; the Albany City Rocks take on the New Jersey Shore Shots. The 6-2 guard going into his sophomore year averaged just over 30 minutes per game and 3.5 points per game in his first season with the Nittany Lions. Battle's coach at Bishop Maginn, Richard Hurley, was also in attendance on Saturday afternoon.
L.I. Lightning-Canning Trounced by R.A.I.D.E.R.S.
With five Long Island Lightning teams entered into the 17-under pools in the GymRat Challenge, the wealth of talent is obviously spread throughout all the teams. On Saturday afternoon, the Long Island Lightning-Canning team was run over by the R.A.I.D.E.R.S. by a score of 63-37. The R.A.I.D.E.R.S., comprised of players from Pennsylvania, ran the open floor well and used their strong and quick guards to run past a Lightning team that couldn't match up with the R.A.I.D.E.R athletes. Devin Coleman led the R.A.I.D.E.R.S. with 23 points, while Oscar Griffin chipped in with 15 points. Nobody on the Lightning team was in double digits in the scoring column.
Iona Prep Guard Leads Pride
Iona Prep guard Andre Pope led his New York Pride team, made up of fellow Westchester County players, to a 71-46 victory over Firm A.C. on Saturday afternoon at Siena College.
The quick 6-1 guard controlled the tempo of the game and led all scorers with 16 points to guide his squad to the blowout victory. 6-6 forward Joe Efese of St. Joseph's of Montvale contributed 14 points for coach Bill Neff's squad. After leading 35-25 at halftime, the Pride turned the tempo up and ran the Pennsylvania-based Firm A.C. squad out of the gym.
