NEW YORK, NY - The initial excitement of playing on television passed, so Brentwood was able to get back to normal after losing to Christ the King Friday night. They were matched up in the consolation game of the SNY Invitational against Mt. Vernon. After falling behind early, Brentwood made a steady comeback behind 21 points from Jamel Allen to win 72-67.

Mt. Vernon led 37-28 at halftime, but Brentwood was able to cut the lead to 53-49 going into the final period. Allen was the one to do the heavy lifting, scoring 15 points in the period. Allen was asked how he was able to get his game going in the third period.

“I don’t know, something jumped into me” Allen said after the game. “My teammates started opening me up. Coach [Anthony Jimenez] was like take it, if your wide open just take it, and that’s what I did, pretty much”

The score was 59-54 when Brentwood made probably the two biggest shots of the game. Midway through the final period Ryan Beckles (11 points) drained a three pointer from the corner to cut the lead down to 2 points. On the next possession, Rahmel Allen (19 points) drained a three from the other corner to give Brentwood a 60-59 lead, their first since early in the game. It was basically a free throw shooting contest the rest of the way, but Mt. Vernon did have one last opportunity to tie it down 70-67 with 3.7 seconds left. Marco Morency missed the three from the top of the key and Brentwood was able to get the win.

Brentwood’s Mike Almonacy, who scored 15 points and is committed to play for Stony Brook, believed his team thought it was going to be easy to play in the SNY Invitational, but instead they came out flat against Christ the King. The loss had Almonacy and his teammates mad at each other for the way they played and they wanted to make amends in the consolation game.

“We have to show them who Brentwood is because Long island doesn’t get respect, and everybody knows that” Almonacy said. “Yesterday we didn’t get respect and today, I hope we earned that back”

Morency led Mt. Vernon with 21 points. Big man Gregory Calixte scored 18 points and pulled down 19 rebounds for the Knights. Noah Morgan also had a decent game, 11 points and 9 rebounds.
