2016 Mayor’s Cup Best in the City

NEW YORK, NY – The top Public School Athletic League (PSAL) players assembled for this year’s Mayor’s Cup Game at Baruch College. This year’s contest did not feature any CHSAA players but the games were exciting nonetheless.

The senior talent was divided into two factions which included both Class AA and Class A players. The Brooklyn/Queens team consisted of players committed players including St. Francis (Brooklyn) bound Rasheem Dunn (14 points) while the Brooklyn/Manhattan/Staten Island team featured Cardozo’s Tareq Coburn (11 points) who recently commit to St. Bonaventure.

It would be a spirited battle that featured high flying dunks and jaw-dropping moves. The Brooklyn/Manhattan/Staten Island team would trail throughout with Brooklyn/Queens pulling away late en route to a 105-89 win.

Brooklyn/Queens jumped out in front as Harry Truman’s Kevin Dennis (24 points) and Coburn attacked the rim. Dunn countered for Brooklyn/Manhattan/Staten Island as did his Jefferson high school teammate Curtis Smith (13 points). giving them a 14 point advantage.

Campus Magnet’s Jamel Kearney (14 points) and John Adam’s Errol James (6 points) had a strong second quarter and increase Brooklyn/Queens lead to 52-37 at the midway point.

Brooklyn/Manhattan/Staten Island made a push in the third quarter as Petrides 6’7” Christopher Arminas (15 points) reigned down facializing dunks. With 5:44 left in the third, Brooklyn/Queens’ lead diminished to 10 points.

James stepped up his game from the perimeter late in the third quarter and Kearney also got buckets and Brooklyn/Queens’ surged back up to 18 points as the fourth quarter commenced. Dennis would go off in the final quarter as did Westinghouse’s Gerald Williams (12 points) who tried to push back but Burns earned MVP status as the Brooklyn/Queens eventually waxed its opponent by 16 points.
