CTK Girls Dispatch Molloy; Earn Catholic Diocesan Title

FRESH MEADOWS, NY - After Christ the King's Sierra Calhoun managed to post just two points in the first quarter, she unleashed a fury in the second period, draining 12 of her game-high 22 while Kollyns Scarborough contributed 16.

The senior duo's overall outstanding performance helped lead the top-ranked Royals over No. 3 Archbishop Molloy, 58-41, in the Girls CHSAA Division I Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan Championship, Saturday night at St. Francis Prep.

Though Christ the King had yet to click, playing a little sloppily and failing behind 5-0 midway through the first quarter, Calhoun did not worry one bit.

"I think the whole team knew that we were going to get going at some point," the Duke University- commit said. "We weren't really [emotionally] down at that point when we started off slow. It wasn't really that big of a margin."

A senior laden squad, Coach Bob Mackey didn't have to say much to motivate the Royals after the first period, leaving it up to the upperclassman to do the job on their own, Calhoun noted.

"He really didn't have to tell us much," she said. "We were all fired up. Our momentum and senior leadership led us throughout the game."

Scarborough, who is committed to Siena College, played a fierce defense and sparkled on the boards in the winning effort. But it was her offensive output that had Mackey feeling a bit incredulous.

"I had to look at the book, and then I opened the book and noticed Kollyns had 16 points," Mackey explained. "I said to her, her 'When did you have 16 points?' And that's the way she is; she's just quiet-she makes free throws, she makes shots. I thought she had a great game on the boards and I thought she did really well defensively, but 16 points? When did she do that?"

Senior guard Nyasha Irizarry paced Molloy with 15 while junior wing Aryn McClure added 11 in the loss.
