Abraham Lincoln faces downtown rival
BROOKLYN, NY - NYCHoops.net #3 ranked Abraham Lincoln (13-3) traveled to downtown to face Westinghouse for a Brooklyn AA game. After jumping out to a fast start, Lincoln found themselves in a close contest at halftime.
After the break the flow of the game changed and Lincoln took control to coast to a 55-39 win.
Seton Hall commit Isaiah Whitehead was smooth and easy while he was on his way to a game high 22 points. Lincoln started the game on fire. Whitehead and Desi Rodriguez started out the scoring for the defending champions. Whitehead hit a three pointer which was followed by a dunk from Rodriguez. On another offensive possession, Rodriguez tipped in a missed shot. Whitehead added a lay-up and the score was quickly 9-0.
The lead ballooned to as much as 15-2 at the start, but Westinghouse methodically fought their way back into the game. The score was 21-19 and a game that looked like it was going to be a blowout initially had turned into an actual battle.
Lincoln didn't even leave the floor at the half, while Westinghouse returned to the court when there was only 30 seconds left on the clock. When the half started sophomore guard Rakym Felder opened up the scoring with a lay-up. Whitehead nailed another three from the left wing and Lincoln opened up a 26-19 lead. That was the beginning of a stranglehold that the Railsplitters never let go of. They eventually built up their lead to 48-26 early in the fourth quarter.
The game was never in doubt for Lincoln. Unfortunately for Westinghouse, they were playing without their best player, senior Isaiah Gurley. Gurley was being disciplined and was suspended for the game because of an altercation in a previous game against South Shore. The game lost a little luster with Gurley being out of the lineup. But at least for a half it looked like they might have pulled off an upset.
The only other player from Lincoln In double figures was Rodriguez with 10 points. Tremaine Elder led Westinghouse with 11 points.
