Lady Vikings Run Over Kangaroos

BROOKLYN, NY - There is a big reason why the University of Maryland didn't waste much time snapping up forward Brianna Fraser at the start of her junior year at South Shore High School-she can flat out play.

That was clearly evident Monday night as the 6-foot-3 Fraser scored a game-high 10 points, grabbed a number of rebounds and blocked a multitude of shots in the Lady Vikings' 52-27 dominate road win over Boys and Girls High School.

While she scored a modest amount, it was Fraser's defensive performance that impressed her coach, Anwar Gladden, the most.

"She had a lot of blocks today," Gladden incredulously said. "Yeah, she does make it look effortless. She only had 10 points, but she was active today."

South Shore took a 27-15 half time lead, and continued to stifle the Kangaroos' offensive while building a 35-22 advantage at the end of the third quarter, highlighted by a nice put back layup by Fraser off of a teammate's miss free throw.

The Lady Vikings used precision outside shooting from Fraser and guards Ashley McDonald and Tsahai Corbie, including two treys from the freshman, to outscore Boys & Girls, 17-5, in the fourth period, more than good enough to seal the victory for the visiting squad.

McDonald and Aliesha Thomas dropped in eight apiece and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi-commit Emmeri Archer chipped in with seven.

Though South Shore is 7-6 overall, its 6-1 in the PSAL's Class AA Conference, with the Canarsie, Brooklyn school's biggest win coming against Murry Bergtraum, 15-time reigning league champs, on Friday.

However, Gladden would like to see his team catch fire going forward, especially with only eight regular season division contests remaining on the schedule.

"We've been up and down. We got to become more consistent," the 12-year coach emphasized. "We win, we lose, we win, we lose. We got to get the ball going. It's getting late."
