LuHi Flies By Chaminade

BROOKVILLE, NY - Long Island Lutheran (9-1) ended 2012 with a bang. Playing against the Chaminade Flyers (6-2) in front of a home crowd on Sunday evening, the Crusaders put forth an aerial attack that eventually grounded the Flyers, 78-65. Tim Quashie led the effort with a team high 20 points.

With an athletic line-up of four guards and a power forward, LuHi surged ahead early. Mical-Ryan Boyd (19 points) would drain a 3-ball followed by an and-1 in the paint by UConn-bound Kentan Facey (8 points) and with 3:05 remaining in the opening quarter, the Crusaders were comfortably ahead 16-2.

Chaminade was ice cold from the perimeter until Thomas Ahern (9 points) and Thomas O'Connell (16 points) knocked down shots but the Flyer were still down 17 points entering the second quarter.

In the second quarter the tempo and the offensive production of both teams picked up. Big men Jon Patterson (17 points) and Mike Walsh (12 points) gave Chaminade a boost, scoring higher percentage baskets in the post which cut their deficit down to 8 point late in the quarter.

Quashie scored from mid-range off nice feeds from point guard Chris Atkinson (15 points) increasing Lutheran's lead back to double-digits. A strong finish by Chaminade would put them within striking range as the half ended.

"We let [Chaminade] control tempo in the second quarter," said Crusaders head Coach John Buck. "We had to get back to doing what we do best."

At the onset of the third quarter with only a 40-36 lead, the Crusaders applied a full court press resulting in turnovers. Perimeter shots by Tawayne Anderson (12 points) and Boyd re-established a double-digit lead heading into the final quarter.

Chaminade attempted to shoot their way back into the game but only managed to exchange baskets throughout most of the fourth quarter. LuHi's lead grew to 15 points with 3:50 left in regulation. Chaminade would end 2012 ironically losing by 13.
