Canarsie Lady Chiefs Remain Undefeated
BROOKLYN, NY - Canarsie girls basketball team received solid performances from a number of players in its PSAL Class A Conference game against Franklin K. Lane.
But it was athletic sophomore Hevenly Palmer who managed to shine the most, scoring a game-high 18 points while adding five assist in the Lady Chiefs' 61-13 win over the Lady Knights Tuesday night at home.
Junior standouts Fataya Larry and Briana Stoddart chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively, for Canarsie. In addition, Stoddart contributed nine dishes, and junior Tania Rivera and senior Lisanne Abel dropped in nine points apiece.
While Canarsie (6-0, 6-1) demolished Franklin K. Lane, and continues to rout divisional opponents this season, Canarsie coach Keiya Smith wasn't exactly thrilled with the way her team played, even though the scoreboard told a different story.
"I don't think it was our best game. We definitely had a lot of lapses, we didn't execute, and we got lazy," Smith said after the tilt. "So, what they don't understand is that we're winning these games by a lot. When there's more competition, we'll have to execute. So my main concerns are about execution and playing defense, and I don't think that happened in the second and third quarters."
Canarsie didn't consistently implement designed plays the way she had hoped, but Smith did say the all-out effort never disappeared.
"Overall, I am always proud of them, because no matter what we're doing, if we're not executing, we're always hustling," she said. "They play hard all the time. That's not a problem."
Canarsie looks to keep its conference unbeaten streak intact against visiting Brooklyn Tech High School Friday, January 20 at 4:30 p.m.
