Originally under the umbrella of the New Height AAU Basketball Program, NYCHoops.net learned on Tuesday that the Yung & the Restless 17U team coached by Curtiz "Coach Luck" Simpson has made a move.
"I am no longer at New Heights," said Coach Simpson. "We are now Yung & the Restless/Lady SCAN."
Coach Luck said that a "difference in direction" was the catalyst for the move from the Bronx, NY basketball program to the East Harlem, NY based SCAN program run by Ron Harris. Although they've parted ways, Simpson said, "I wish them luck."
According to Simpson, Kiah Gillespie and Milicia "Mimi" Reid from Murry Bergtraum will move to the Yung & the Restless/Lady SCAN while Christ the King's Sydney Zambrotta and others will stay with New Heights.
One of the highest profile players emerging from Yung & the Restless/New Heights was Maria Backman who was named Bronx Player of the Year as well as second team All City by the NY Daily News. Backman, who averaged 26ppg,11rpg, 3bpg verbally committed to the University of Michigan.
Simpson said he's "kind of" starting from scratch but insisted, he's not worried. "I am resourceful, "said Coach Luck. "Backman is a senior, Kiah is a junior, Mimi is a freshman and I have 7 other girls."
As far as the future, Simpson said he's happy with the transition to Lady Scan and vows his team will make a comeback. "I will make the girls very relevant, starting at the Rose [Classic in the Fall]."
