November 2, 2009 The Exodus vs Exodus championship at the Nike Rose Classic took place on Sunday in Brooklyn and while it was clear that an Exodus team would win, the question would be whether it would be the old guard or the new jacks. While the upstarts would put a scare in the Exodus NYC machine, the defending champs would take it up a notch and best the Exodus Elite, 75-64 in overtime. In the first half, the four time champions Exodus NYC team found themselves on the short end of the lead as the Exodus Elite squad came out slingin', pulling out in front by as many as 8 points. Bria Hartley (21 points), Jennifer O'Neill (29 points) and Jelleah Sidney (8 points) would not relent and soon cut the Elite lead to two points late in the half. A three pointer by Alicia Cropper (28 points) would extend the Elite's teams lead to 5 points but the NYC team would manage to cut the deficit to 33-30 at the half. The upstart Elite team kept the pressure on. With Providence bound Danielle Pearson (8 points) sharing point guard duties with Cropper, the Elite team once again extended their lead to seven points early in third. NYC would claw back, knotting the score at 47 going into the final quarter. Mia Oden (12 points) would put the Elite team back on top early going coast-to-coast and Pearson would pad that lead with strong move to the hole. O'Neill put on a show and pulled NYC within a point allowing Hartley to once again knot the score going 1-2 from the foul line with 3:33 left in the game. Mediocre foul shooting began to come back to haunt the veteran Exodus NYC team and Exodus Elite would once again seep out in front. NYC would get their first lead with 2:50 on the clock as they reached back for the afterburners. However, with 1:06 the score was still knotted at 58 as the Elite attempted to close the show. A hard foul on O'Neill with 49.7 seconds gave Exodus NYC a shot at a 2 point lead but the Kentucky bound star would only go 1-2. Oden would seize the moment with a knock down three with 16 seconds left. Up 61-59, a NYC turnover would put the win in Elite's hands but a missed free throw by Pearson and a lay-up in transition by Hartley would send the game into overtime, tied at 61. With a second chance at a first impression, Exodus NYC came out strong and Hartley, Sidney and O'Neill came up big from the arc and from the fouline. Up by as many as 7 points, Exodus NYC would not let the Elite team even smell the aroma of a potential victory and defending champions would go out on top. ![]() Go to NYC Hoops for all the late breaking NYC basketball news and rankings.
